Abdominal Pain
Abdominal pain can be either localised or generalised. The abdomen contains many organs therefore, it is not always possible to clearly identify the cause of the discomfort. The diagram of the abdomen below highlights areas on the abdomen that correspond to the various conditions that present with abdominal pain.
Abdominal pain can range from general discomfort to severe pain suggestive of a possible perforation such as of a stomach ulcer or other part of the small or large intestines. The general location of pain in the abdomen will help locate the source of the pain and consequently guide to any further tests that may be necessary.
Many causes of abdominal pain are associated with symptoms such as:
Abdominal bloating
Nausea
Sickness
Vomiting
Diarrhoea
Occasionally weight loss.
The investigation of abdominal pain usually involves an abdominal ultrasound (performed with jelly on the skin) as the first test for most patients (see diagnostics). In some cases either a CAT (computer tomography) scan or MR (magnetic resonance) scan is required. Your Surgeon will decide which investigation you require based on the symptoms you are experiencing.
Abdominal pain symptoms are investigated along with blood tests and possible fibre-optic endoscopic examination.
Manchester general surgery will fully investigate all aspects of your pain/ discomfort and guide to the most suitable investigation and possible treatment that you may require.
